HeatVision reports Warner Bros. is developing a Merlin origin film based on the fantasy novels by T.A. Barron entitled The Lost Years of Merlin. The film will trace Merlin’s journey from being a boy washed on the shores of Wales with no memory and no home, to him becoming a young man learning to use his powers and ultimately defender of the natural world and eventual mentor to King Arthur.
Originally the project was setup at Paramount with Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes) working on the script. This new incarnation will still be produced by Donald De Line (Green Lantern) but with new screenwriter Ed Whitworth handling writing duties.
I'm sure Warner Bros. is trying to replace the magic based fantasy film slate when the final Harry Potter and The Hobbit Part 1-2 are released. The studio has also been developing an Excalibur remake which had both Bryan Singer and Guy Ritchie interested in directing. I'm curious if they'll still be pursing the Excalibur film as well since the material is expected to be covered in the Merlin books.
