:: Learn To Knit!

My friend Jo told me about Wool and The Gang some time ago. They are doing really great stuff, teaching people how to knit via really cute videos on their site, and also producing the kind of kits and yarn that YOU GUYS will want to use! Do you want to learn to knit? If you are just starting out, buy some FAT knitting needles and some FAT yarn and let's go!!

Kirsty and I call this The Fonzie Method of casting on. It's really easy and you can feel like Fonzie with your thumb up!

Knit stitch is your basic bumpy stitch. It's probably what your Nanna taught you, if she did indeed teach you how to knit! It's very simple and useful once you get the hang of juggling your stitch. Take it slow and try and be a bit relaxed so that your knitting is not a knotty nightmare. Try saying that 3 times fast!

So, you can just knit your whole piece (say, a scarf...) or you can knit one row and then purl one row and then knit one row and then purl one row... continuing this pattern to make a nice smooth stocking stitch (or stockinette stitch). This is a good stitch if you don't like the traditional bumpy stitch that is the basic knit stitch!

If you are knitting and purling alternate rows and you have to put your work aside, remember that if the SMOOTH side of your work is facing you, you need to PURL the next row. And if the BUMPY side of your work is facing you, you need to KNIT the next row.

Then you need to cast off your stitches, a bit of a wriggly juggle again, but practice makes perfect!
